NeighborWell: A Making Things Right Initiative
NeighborWell is Making Things Right’s initiative for equipping and empowering compassionate Christians (churches, small groups, organizations, communities) to love their LGBTQ+ neighbors well. It’s a growing offering of training opportunities and resources, often paired with a public, healing presence at strategic Pride events and conferences. It’s where repentance becomes action through honest conversation, connection and visible signs that faith communities can show up with radical acceptance and genuine love.
The name grows directly out of MTR’s mission of loving God and loving our neighbor.
- “Neighbor” is theologically neutral, grounded in a command nearly every Christian tradition already affirms, so it invites people in rather than staking out contested ground. And neighbor is a verb: it’s something we do in showing up with love, presence, curiosity, and care for the people around us. NeighborWell invites people to move beyond simply believing in loving their neighbor and into the practice of neighboring well.
- “Well” carries both an adverb and a noun: it signals doing this work carefully and rightly, echoing MTR’s patient, healing posture, while also evoking a literal well, the wellspring that sustains a community’s life.
“NeighborWell” carries forward MTR”s “I’m Sorry” posture and amplifies it with a message still carries repentance at its core: the quiet acknowledgment that the church hasn’t always neighbored well while facilitating an ongoing practice of restoration.
NeighborWell is MTR’s open invitation extended to individuals, small groups, churches, organizations…ANYONE desiring to learn to love our LGBTQ+ neighbors better.

Being an ally is a great place to start, but loving our LGBTQ+ neighbors well is an ongoing process. NeighborWell helps you listen better, understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ people, recognize the ways even well-meaning Christians can unintentionally cause harm, and turn your values into meaningful action. You may already have the heart for this. Training helps give you the tools.
Not at all. Pride can be a meaningful opportunity to show up with compassion and solidarity, but NeighborWell training and community-building events can happen anywhere, anytime. Bring NeighborWell to your church, organization, small group or community any time.
Then you may be exactly where you need to be. NeighborWell isn’t about pretending you have all the answers. It’s about making room for honest questions, listening to real experiences and exploring what it looks like to love our neighbors well, even when the conversation is complicated.
NeighborWell isn’t about shaming people for what they didn’t know yesterday. It’s about what we choose to do with what we know today. Making Things Right begins with acknowledging the hurt that has happened and asking how we can participate in healing and reconciliation.
No. NeighborWell is rooted in MTR’s mission of helping Christians rethink their response and responsibility to LGBTQ+ people. Our focus is on people, relationships, faith, empathy and practical ways to love our neighbors well, not partisan politics.
NeighborWell grows out of MTR’s Christian mission and is particularly designed to equip Christians, churches and faith communities. But our invitation is broad: individuals, small groups, churches, organizations and anyone who wants to learn to love LGBTQ+ neighbors better are welcome.
You’ll explore LGBTQ+ experiences, particularly experiences connected to faith and church; learn how to listen and engage more thoughtfully; and consider practical ways to move from good intentions to meaningful action. MTR’s broader approach follows a simple progression: Know. Respond. Engage.
